Haldar meets NDFB chief
In what may be called an attempt of enhancing trust between the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and New Delhi, the peace interlocutor for the Northeast militant groups P.C. Haldar had an informal meeting with NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary inside central jail here on Friday.
Disclosing that Daimary’s faction of the NDFB has been insisting for a formal meeting with home ministry to initiate the peace process, authoritative security sources in the home ministry told this newspaper that a formal meeting with the NDFB rebel may be convened next month. Clarifying that home ministry was non-committal on releasing the jailed NDFB chief, security sources said that Daimary, who is the prime accused of October 30, 2008 serial bombing case in Assam, would be released only through judicial process.
Indicating that the state government was not very keen on releasing Daimary in hurry as it was pushing the case of pro-talk Ulfa leaders before the elections, security sources said that the first round of peace talks may be held without Daimary.
Admitting that activities of NDFB in Burma and western Assam have created an atmosphere of disbelief, security sources said that the NDFB commanders are not only found to have been strengthening the outfit, but also procuring sophisticated weapons in their camps in Burma.
