Haryana orders profiling of drivers, guards

The Haryana government has ordered the mandatory profiling of all drivers, security guards and other service sector personnel employed with private firms located in Gurgaon.

Gurgaon police commissioner S.S. Deswal asked all BPO firms, information technology companies and local transporters to furnish details of all such employees in their service to help build a comprehensive database that would include biometric details, fresh photographs and scanned copies of drivers licenses of all such workers.
To be created in collaboration with Nasscom before March 2011, the new database would be available to all existing and prospective employers and serve to verify an applicant’s antecedents while also spotting and reporting offenders and criminals.
The database would be constantly updated as newer workers arrive to seek employment in Gurgaon.
Mr Deswal said companies would be responsible for the individuals it hires and that firms must independent verify the antecedents and credentials of the people included on their payrolls. Mr Deswal advised that all companies and BPO’s in particular must deploy only the most experienced and reliable personnel to transport and provide security to women employees.
The police commissioner has further advised firms to allot security contracts only to agencies duly licensed by the government and listed on the Gurgaon police website.
Twenty-five of some 50 agencies that applied for licences after the government enforced private security agency rules have been granted permits to operate in the Gurgaon area.
In a related move, the Gurgaon police directed owners of all private firms to constitute in-house committees to hear complaints of sexual harassment within their workplaces.
The police also notified a sexual harassment helpline (0124-2316100 and 0124-2320100) and a similar service for senior citizens and children on the telephone numbers, 0124-2221559 and 0124-2335100 respectively.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
