HC: Desai plea to be verified

The Delhi high court on Monday directed the CBI to verify the facts after going through the plea of the former Medical Council of India’s president, Ketan Desai, who has knocked the court for an urgent hearing on his bail application as his mother has been hospitalised and he has to attend on her.

Issuing notice to the CBI, Justice S.L. Bhayana sought the probe agency’s response by May 28. Desai, in his application, claimed that that this very court has deferred a hearing of his bail application to June 3.
Claiming that he has to attend on his mother, who was hospitalised in Mumbai, Desai wanted the court to intervene and urgently hear his bail plea instead of hearing it on June 3.
Desai and three others of the MCI, dissolved recently, were arrested by the CBI on April 23 in connection with an alleged bribe of Rs 2 crore for allegedly permitting a medical college in Patiala to admit students despite lack of infrastructure. The four accused were booked by the CBI under Prevention of Corruption Act, dealing with inducing a public servant to accept bribe, criminal misconduct and payment of money. Desai in his application also stated that “I am suffering from hypertension.”

Doubt over BJP Tripura chief degree
Sanjib Deb
Agartala

May 17: The medical degree of the Bharatia Janata Party’s Tripura state unit president Manoj Kanti Debroy came under scanner as in reply to a right to information petition the Agartala Municipal Council, where he is employed for a long time, clearly stated that he is not a doctor.
The Agartala Municipal Council authority stated that he is working as a multipurpose assistant in the civic body and his educational qualification is just higher secondary pass and he is registered as a pharmacist under pharmacist registration tribunal of Tripura though he was running a flourishing practice as a MBBS doctor from the chamber in his house at Pyari Master Bagan area in Agartala.
Dr Debroy who was a general secretary of the party was running the medical practice for a long time but nobody raised any question till he was elevated to the coveted position of president in March 2009, depriving many other aspirants and with the active support of a faction.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
