HC stays fast-track court proceedings
The Himachal Pradesh high court on Saturday restrained a fast-track court at Dharamsala from proceeding further on a government plea seeking cancellation of bail to the four accused in the Aman Kachroo ragging case. The high court had on Thursday issued suo moto notices to Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Abhinav Verma and Kukul Sharma, who were granted bail by the fast-track court on July 17, and summoned them to appear in the court.
Defence lawyer Sharvan Dogra on Saturday pleaded that the accused had been asked to appear on short notice and sought an adjournment. He alleged that his clients were victims of a media trial and asserted that bail had been granted after examination of all records. Justice D.D. Sood restrained the fast track court, which heard the government plea yesterday and asked the accused to explain why the bail should not cancelled, from proceeding further in the matter.
The high court adjourned the case for Monday.
Aman Kachroo, 19, a first year MBBS student at Rajindra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda (Kangra) was allegedly thrashed by his seniors and subsequently died on March 8, 2009.
His death had sparked an outrage and the government ordered a magisterial inquiry. —PTI
