Heart surgery goes awry as man gets blisters on leg
A Jaipur resident, who underwent a major heart surgery at Lilavati Hospital in February, suffered severe blisters on his left leg after the surgery.
While the patient, who underwent 12 graft surgeries to heal the wound on his leg, is considering filing a consumer court complaint, doctors claimed that it would be wrong to call it a case of medical negligence.
Savio Freitas, 34, was detected with a tear in his aorta, and the valve was leaking blood continuously when he was brought to Lilavati Hospital. The surgery involved a complete reconstruction of the affected vessels and the procedure took around 13 hours. “In a surgery, like in the case of Freitas’, the body has almost no circulation with a reduced temperature. In such cases pressure sores, akin to bedsores are possible. The incidence of pressure sores is as high as 10-12 per cent in such surgeries,” said Mr Freitas’ surgeon.
Mr Freitas was treated for the blisters for free, and discharged on Friday after undergoing 12 graft surgeries on his leg. “We are considering filing a consumer court complaint,” Mr Freitas’ wife Preeti said. Cardiac surgeons agreed that such incidents can take place in surgeries that last for hours together. “In such surgeries, blood supply reduces, which can cause pressure sores. It cannot be construed as medical negligence,” said Dr Suresh Rao.
