Heavy vehicle ban extended to suburbs from Wednesday
Chennai: The sudden decision of the Chennai traffic police to extend the existing ban on entry of heavy vehicles into the city between 8 am and 11 pm, to greater Chennai limits, on Wednesday resulted in some heated exchange of words between lorry drivers and policemen, who were implementing the ban, on the roads.
“This is not a new rule. The ban was already there in the city. At that time, the suburb was under a different commissionerate. Though the suburban area was added to the city nearly two years back, we have not implemented the ban in the area.
The heavy vehicles were banned only between 8 and 11 in the morning and between 4 and 8 in the evening. The drivers were allowed to transport goods during other hours. But now we have decided to extend the ban to the old suburban areas.
As many as 18 roads leading to Chennai will have the ban,” a senior official said. The police attributed their sudden decision to extend the existing ban to the suburban areas to the metro rail construction activities on GST Road and PH Road.
