Heroin accused tries to kill self; wrestler sought
The drug haul scandal in Punjab took another twist on Saturday when the key accused in the case, Anup Singh Kahlon, attempted suicide. The Punjab police, meanwhile, is still not clear whether they will summon Olympic medal-winning boxer Vijender Singh, whose name was mentioned by the accused.
[The police said teams have been sent to different locations to nab wrestler Jagdish Bhola, a former Punjab police cop named by Kahlon as the gang kingpin, PTI reports. Bhola, an Arjuna awardee, held the title Rustum-e-Hind.]
According to Fatehgarh Sahib SSP H.S. Mann, “The key accused, Anup Singh Kahlon, attempted suicide. He took out a wire from the bucket used for bathing and tried to slit his wrist. He is out of danger.” The SSP added that Kahlon was immediately taken to a civil hospital, where doctors treated him within minutes. Kahlon was discharged later. “We registered a suicide attempt case against him under IPC Sec. 309,” the SSP said.
The SSP said the investigation was under progress and the six arrested accused were being interrogated.
“As of now no decision on Vijender Singh has been taken. All aspects of the case are being investigated,” he said.
The police is not revealing anything about the confessions of pugilist, Ram Singh, as yet. “We are verifying these. I cannot comment further at this stage,” the SSP said when asked about reports of Ram Singh’s confession that he and Vijender Singh procured drugs from Kahlon.
