High turnout in C’garh poll, BJP nervous
Byelection to Sanjari Balod Assembly constituency in Chhattisgarh, held on Monday, witnessed a high turnout of about 75 per cent, making the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nervous.
Uneasiness in the BJP camp was discernible with reports of heavy polling in the rural areas pouring in the state party headquarters here.
Adding to its worries, the polling in urban areas, considered the forte of the ruling party, remained dull.
The Opposition Congress appeared jubilant at the prospect of wresting the seat from BJP due to high polling.

KAUSHIK PRADHAN
Kolkata
Feb. 14: For the first time in the electoral history of West Bengal, the Election Commission (EC) will identify the Assembly constituencies which are prone to high expenditure and corrupt practices.
For each such “expenditure sensitive” constituency, a large number of assistant expenditure observers along with additional number of flying squads and surveillance teams will be deployed.
The Election Commission (EC) also decided that the banks would be required to report to the district electoral officer (DEO) every withdrawal of money exceeding `1 lakh from any account on a day after the model code of conduct comes into effect.
