Himayat baig gets death for Pune bombing

Mirza Himayat Baig (33), the lone accused arrested for the January 2010 blasts at the German Bakery in Pune, was sentenced to death by the Shivajinagar sessions court on Thursday. Seventeen persons were killed and around 60 were injured when the blast ripped through the popular eatery in upmarket Koregaon Park. According to sources, Baig wept after the sentence was read out and fainted while being taken back after the hearing. When contacted, Baig’s lawyer, Kainath Shaikh, said, “We will soon file an appeal in the HC.”
The court on April 15 had held him guilty of all charges. He was convicted of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code.

SC cancels 49 K’taka iron mine leases

The leases of 49 iron ore mines in Karnataka, from where illegalities have been reported, were cancelled Thursday by the Supreme Court. However, it allowed resumption of iron ore extraction at nine state mines which it had earlier banned.
The court also ordered that UK-based Vedanta’ bauxite mining project in Orissa’s Niyamgiri hills be suspended till the gram sabhas of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts give approval as tribes and forest dwellers worship hills.
The court said illegal iron ore mining on the Andhra-Karnataka border will stay suspended till the state boundary is demarcated.
