Hisar limping to normal after government accepts demand

Barring a stray incident of road block, life was limping back to normalcy in Hisar on Wednesday, where curfew has been lifted as agitating Jats demanding quota suspended their protests after the state government agreed to some of their demands.

Prohibitory orders has been imposed in the region here while educational institutions are closed as a precautionary measure.

"The situation in Hisar district is normal. No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere so far. Vehicular traffic on most of the routes is back to normal," Hisar's acting superintendent of police Pankaj Nyan told PTI.

Some protesters had, however, gathered and blocked the Hisar-Chandigarh highway near Narwana, the police said. The state government on Tuesday accepted three main demands of the protesters after chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda held a meeting with the representatives of the Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, spearheading the stir.

The accepted demands included a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the youth killed in police firing on Sunday, job to a member of his family and registration of a case against Subhash Yadav, who was removed as superintendent of police (SP), Hisar.

Curfew, which was imposed in the district on Tuesday in view of the tense situation, was lifted late on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Samiti president Yashpal Malik told reporters here on Wednesday that though the community had decided to suspend its protest in Hisar and elsewhere and open the road blockades following acceptance of the their three demands, the agitation for reservation in government jobs under OBC category would continue.

"Our agitation for the reservation of Jats shall continue peacefully and democratically," he said. "Our agitation will be peaceful and no road will be blocked by our workers. Some anti-social elements took advantage of protest and damaged the government and private property. We shall help the police to identify the miscreants," Malik said.

Samitis’ executive committee would take stock of the situation and chalk out next action in support of our demand for reservation, he said further.

Malik also warned the Central government that if its demand for quota was not met by October 3, they would intensify the agitation and block all the roads leading to Delhi in view of the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Violence had erupted in Hisar and adjoining areas after members of the Samiti demanding quota for the community under the OBC category blocked several roads on Tuesday.

A youth was killed and over 10 persons, including policemen, were injured in violent clash between the protesters and the police.
