Honour killing: Brothers make sister widow

A 21-year-old student was murdered in a case of honour killing in Outer Delhi on Thursday morning allegedly by two brothers of his lover whom he married against the wishes of her family three months ago.

The incident took place in Mangolpuri and the deceased has been identified as Ranvir who was pursuing a course in a private college in Gwalior, police said adding the two brothers were arrested.

Ranvir and Jyoti, who fell in love while they were in school, got married in Arya Samaj on April 17 and had approached the court seeking security claiming that they faced threat from the family.

The court had then called the families during which they agreed that they would get the duo married again in accordance with social rituals in the presence of gathering of friends and relatives.

Accordingly, Jyoti went back to her parents home, according to police.

Thursday morning, police said, Jyoti's brothers Gaurav (22) and Rahul (18) went to Ranvir's residence, took him out and allegedly stabbed him to death. Ranvir's family had left for Bharatpur in Rajasthan, said police.

Ranvir's sister had seen the brothers taking her brother out. The official said Ranvir's sister Kavita followed the brothers of Jyoti when they took her sibling out.

"Kavita followed them. She saw that Gaurav caught Ranvir and Rahul attacked him with a knife. She raised an alarm, after which the assailants ran away from the spot", the police official said.

On the statement Kavita, a case was registered, the official said. To apprehend the accused, three teams were formed and sent to different areas of Delhi and raids conducted, he added.

"We received an input that Rahul and Gaurav would come to Y Block Park to meet an acquaintance. On this, a trap was laid made and at about 4 pm, both were arrested," the official said.

During interrogation, they told police that they were not happy with the marriage.

"They are Brahmin and Ranvir was a Thakur by caste. Local residents used to taunt them. However, now their parents were ready for the marriage. On Wednesday, Ranvir went to their house to meet Jyoti. They opposed this and warned Ranvir not to meet Jyoti till they were formally married.

"In the morning, they hatched a plan to kill Ranvir. They called Ranvir from his house and stabbed him with a knife inflicting fatal injuries," the official said.
