Hooch kills 56 in Bengal, about 120 ill

At least 56 persons died while 120 others fell ill after consuming spurious liquor at hooch dens on Tuesday night at Sangrampur village at Mograhat in South 24-Parganas. It is feared the death toll will go up.

The hooch deaths led to an uproar in the state Assembly in Kolkata on Wednesday. The Opposition deman-ded that chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the health minister, make a statement in the House.
State minister Subr-ata Mukherjee said later that four people had been arrested, and that each of the deceased would get `2 lakhs as compensation.
