House adjournment worries Speaker
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is anguished over the washout of the Winter Session of Parliament while Rajya Sabha chariman M. Hamid Ansari asked all sections of the House to introspect disapproving behaviour of the members during the session.
They commented after the two Houses were adjourned sine die on Monday. In his valedictory remarks, Mr Ansari said: “All sections of the House would perhaps introspect on the record of this session to seek the distinction between dissent, remonstration, agitation and disruption.”
He further said the prohibition in the rules about shouting slogans, displaying posters, obstructing proceedings by coming into the Well of the House was consistently ignored. Peace prevailed only when obituaries were read, he observed.
Ms Kumar hoped that the logjam would not spill over to the Budget Session for which she asked the government and the Opposition to find a “middle path”.
“I am anguished. I would like such a thing not to take place in the future and hope the next session runs smoothly,” she told reporters after the Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die. The Parliament could function barely for a few hours during the 23 sittings which began on November 9.
