House halted twice over Babhali issue
The tussle between the states of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh over Babhali project affected the proceedings of the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Speaker was forced to adjourn the House twice over the issue.
Trouble erupted as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MPs trooped into the well of the house alleging that Maharashtra was “illegally” constructing the Babhali barrage ignoring the interests of Andhra. This was hotly contested by members of the Shiv Sena from Maharashtra. Amidst the din, even Gopinath Munde, the deputy leader of the Opposition stood up once in support of Maharashtra and said the Babhali barrage should be constructed.
Intervening in the matter, after two adjournments, the water resources minister P.K. Bansal said the governemnt cannot do much as the matter is pending before the supreme court. “The Supreme Court is seized of the matter. Even a contempt petition has been filed in the Supreme Court which is pending. Therefore, I would earnestly request all of you that there are other fora available for the point that we have raised here,” pleaded Mr Bansal. He added, every member knows as to what is the role of government in the matter which involves disputes between two states.”
