HSSs for 148 panchayats
Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government will begin higher secondary schools in 148 panchayats where there are currently none. “The objective is to give all students who had passed SSLC an opportunity to get admitted to the plus two course,” Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said during the post-cabinet briefing here on Wednesday.
The Education Department will soon invite applications from schools in these areas. “Government schools will get first priority while sanctioning higher secondary schools,” the Chief Minister said.
“Corporate schools (run by the church and other community organizations like NSS and SNDP) will get second preference. Only last priority will be given to schools run by private individuals,” he said.
Chandy said that the UDF government had promised last year to provide opportunity for all SSLC students to gain admission to higher secondary classes. “Besides starting new higher secondary schools, we have asked the Education Department to come up with other measures to achieve the ideal,” he said.
