Anantapur: The Samaikyandhra activists held a massive protest from Lepakshi Nandi to Gandhi statue, a historical centre in the district, as part of ongoing agitation on the 64th consecutive day, demanding the Centre to rollback its decision on the bifurcation of state, on Wednesday.
The Samaikyandhra JAC of Lepakshi led by tahsildar K. Prabhakar Babu organised a one-and-half kilometer march from world biggest Nandi statue towards Gandhi statue at Lepkshi bus stand.
Students from various institutions including Navodaya school, SHG women, teachers and other organisations joined the mega protest.
Lepakshi tahsildar Prabhakar Babu said the protest was held to mark Gandhi Jayanti along with the agitation. The activists formed a human chain at Nandi statue on the occasion.
Activists, including one dressed as Gandhiji wove clothes to mark Gandhi Jayanti, staged a protest at the general hospital.
Members of various Joint Action Committees staged a protest tying ribbons to mouths at Gandhi statue in Tadipatri bus stand in Anantapur.
The Joint Action Committees of Samaikyandhra called for protest in Gandhian way to mount pressure on the Centre to reverse its decision on the division of state to mark Gandhi Jayanti.
Activists of the AP NGOs association staged protests wearing Gandhi hats and dressed in white at many centres. They paid rich tributes for the Father of Nation.
In Kurnool, minor irrigation minister T.G. Venkatesh unveiled Mahatma Gandhi statue at Zilla parishad office premises as part of 144th birth anniversary celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Venkatesh called upon the people to follow ideals of Gandhiji.
Stating that many people including foreigners are following the path of non-violence preached by Gandhi, Venkatesh expressed serious concern over the rising level of violence in the country.

Meanwhile, the transport network was paralysed in the region with RTC buses confined to depots on the 64th consecutive day of agitation.
