Hundreds in Mumbai march to Shinde house
Hundreds of citizens from Bandra on Saturday carried out a protest march to the home of Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde against the horrific gangrape incident in Delhi. Though the march went off without a hitch, the protestors did have some anxious moments in the beginning as the police had sent a warning of detaining them for unlawful assembly.
According to Aftab Siddiqui, activist and member of the Khar ALM who was instrumental in organising the march, the Bandra police had sent indirect messages to locals, asking them to stay away as under Section 149, they would be booked for unlawful assembly with an intention to disturb the peace.
“The police claimed that as the Bandra residence of Mr Shinde was not his official residence, the aam aadmi had no right to protest there and would be immediately detained,” said Ms Siddiqui.
However, as the Delhi police atrocity was aired on live TV, the police decided to let the protestors have their way.
Nearly 300 protesters carrying placards and shouting slogans against the inefficiency of the authorities to provide security to women.
