Hunted Maoist nabbed in Chennai
The ‘Q’ Branch police dealing with cases of terrorism and extremism on Saturday arrested a state secretary of a Maoist outfit from the city.
The arrested person was identified as Vivek, 45, a resident of Royapettah, who was on the run since 2007 when the police had raided an arms training camp of Maoists.
Based on intelligence inputs, a special team supervised by ‘Q’ Branch superintendent Mr Sampath Kumar arrested Vivek from Shenoy Nagar area, said sources.
He was taken to a secluded place for interrogation. The purpose of his visit to Chennai and whether he had any specific plans is being probed, added sources.
Vivek was providing arms training to Maoist cadres in forest areas of Periyakulam in Theni district when police had surrounded the camp in 2007.
Though police exchanged fire with the Maoists, Vivek had managed to escape. Since then the cops had been on the lookout for him.
Police believes he had shifted his base to North India and had recently moved to Chennai, probably to expand the Maoist base in southern parts of Tamil Nadu, when the ‘Q’ Branch police arrested him.
His wife Padma is also a Maoist activist who is currently underground, the police added.
