Husband, in-laws held for suicide of pregnant woman
A 23-year-old youth was on Saturday arrested along with his parents and uncle after his pregnant wife allegedly committed suicide at their residence over dowry demands in suburban Andheri, police said.
Shaheen Shaikh (21) allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a rod using a dupatta on Friday at her residence in Janata colony of Gulshan Nagar, they said.
Shaikh's parents alleged that her husband Tanveer Shaikh (23), father-in-law Jameer Shaikh (53), mother-in-law Mobrin Shaikh (46) and uncle Muqnaar Shaikh (52) had harassed her for dowry, police said.
"Shaheen and Tanveer had a love marriage on March 25 this year. Families of both the sides were not ready for their marriage initially but later they agreed as both were adamant of marrying each other," senior inspector V. D. Bhoite of DN Nagar police station said.
The victim's father Kamrul Hoda Khan (52) claimed that since marriage, Shaheen had been harassed physically and mentally by her husband and in-laws, Bhoite said. Kamrul claimed that his daughter had even telephoned them a number of times explaining her ordeal.
The accused were arrested today and booked under IPC sections 304B (dowry death) and 498 (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and were remanded in police custody till October 28.
