Husband's home has no toilet so bride runs away

A 17-year-old girl, who was recently came to live with her in-laws after marriage, ran back to her father’s home because there was no proper toilet facility there.

The girl has declared that she would return to the in-laws’ home only if they got a toilet constructed for her.

This interesting incident took place in Maharajganj recently.

Priyanka, a student of class 12, was married to Amarjit in 2007.

Her ‘gauna’ ceremony (final ceremony after which the bride comes to live with her husband) took place recently and when the bride arrived in Vishnupur Khurd village where her in-laws live, she was dismayed to find that the house did not have a proper toilet.

Talking to local reporters, Priyanka said that she found it rather shameful to defecate and urinate in the open area. “There are people moving around all the time during the day and I found it extremely embarrassing. Even at night, it is not safe to go out in the open. I suffered the shame for two days but on the third day, I could not bear it and returned to my father’s home. If my father-in-law gets a toilet constructed, I will happily go back and live with my husband and in-laws,” she said.

Ram Jeevat, Priyanka’s father-in-law, understands the plight of his daughter-in-law but said that he did not have the means to get a toilet constructed.

“I have two teenaged daughters and they face a similar ordeal but I cannot afford to get a toilet constructed. , admitted that he was initially taken aback at the demand of his daughter-in-law and was furious that she had disappeared.

Meanwhile, Priyanka’s demand and Ram Jeevat’s helplessness has been heard by sanitation NGO ‘Sulabh International’ that has now decided to give her an award of Rs 2 lakh and also gift her an ultra modern toilet with a bathroom at her new home, at their own cost.

Sulabh International Founder Bindeshwar Pathak said the girl’s act should be an inspiration and example for others.

It is noteworthy that UP recently discovered a toilet scam worth Rs 2,900 crore in which money sanctioned to build toilets was allegedly siphoned off.
