Hyderabad may lose out on students
Hyderabad: The latest developments regarding formation of Telangana have become a cause of concern for college managements in the city who are fearing a drastic drop in admissions of students from other regions of the state. The city is a hub of professional colleges where students from all parts of the state take admissions.
Hundreds of engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and M.Tech colleges exist in and around the city. The number of professional colleges located in and around the city surpasses the total number of professional colleges located in all other districts of the state put together.
For professional colleges in the city, students from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions are the ‘bread and butter’, as it is these students who take admissions in professional colleges in large numbers both in merit quota and management quota.
A large number of students from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions became ‘local students’ here by shifting to Hyderabad for study purpose right at upper primary school level from Class VII to take integrated coaching for IITs, NITs, Eamcet, AIIMS, JIPMER etc. The continuos study for a period of five years at any place will make any student ‘local’.
“We expect almost nil admissions from Seemandhra region for a period of five years after Telangana state is formed,” said K.V.K. Rao, chairman of St, Mary’s Group of Institutions.
