Hyderabad woman in Kerala home
Kozhikode: Najma Begum is full of nostalgic memories of Hyderabad, the city of her childhood, her family living at Lalpet in the city. But she is living at an orphanage at Mele Chovva, Kannur, in North Kerala.
Najma Begum's day begins with making a garland of fresh flowers and waiting for a visitor. An inmate of Amala Bhavan home for the destitute at Mele Chovva, Najma Begum’s full name is Najma Nija Begum. She was found at Kannur railway station on July 16. Since then she has been living at the orphanage, thanks to some social activists.
Najma Begum remembers that her house at Lalpet is 10 km from Hyderabad railway station. Chief ticket inspector M. Krishnan who ensured the safety of the woman said the woman also remembers her children Muhammed, Sheshabana and Najma Beevi, and also remembers the shops near her home. She also remembers her parents but is unable to say how she reached Kannur and does not speak of her husband.
An auto driver Renjith was the first to inform the railway authorities about the woman sleeping on a newspaper, showing signs of slight mental disorder, but never asked for alms.
The Amala Bhavan orphanage authorities are trying to locate Najma’s kin but have failed to do so.
