Idol smuggler Subash Kapoor’s counsels cry foul
A group of lawyers representing international idol smuggler Subash Kapoor, who is in police custody, is desperately trying to get access to the undisclosed interrogation room where the accused is being questioned for the last three days.
“As per the court order the police team should interrogate Kapoor when his lawyers are present. But the idol wing officials have not even informed us where our client is being questioned. We have been sending telegrams to them seeking information. We have got no reply so far,” said Mr Kingston Jerold, counsel representing the 63-year-old idol smuggler.
Kapoor is an Indian American settled in New York for the last three decades. He had been caught by the Interpol after the Tamil Nadu police had put out a look-out notice for him for stealing 18 temple idols in Ariyalur district.
“How can the police extract a confession from him without our presence? No court is going to honour it,” his lawyer added.
The police, however, maintained that Kapoor was co-operating and had been answering questions. According to sources, officials are sure of nailing Kapoor and they will not mind making some of the other accused approvers.
“Subash Kapoor is the main man. We can’t let him go. In the process we may have to go soft on other accused,” an officer said.
