IG report for action on errant police, clears girls
Inspector-general of police, Konkan Range, Sukhvinder Singh, who was asked to conduct an inquiry in the case where two girls were arrested for posting comments on Facebook submitted his report to the Maharashra DGP on Friday.
In the report, Mr Singh stated that the sections applied in the case were not justified and recommended administrative action against the officers involved in the case.
BMM students Shaheen Dhada, 21, and her friend Renu Srinivasan, 20, were arrested by the police after they put comments against the closure of the city on the day Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray died.
The complaint was filed by the Sena’s Palghar president who said that the sentiments of Shiv Sainiks were hurt as they considered Thackeray to be their “God”. After a huge furore with senior politicians and others condemning the arrests, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan had asked Mr Singh to conduct an inquiry into the case.
“The inquiry report was submitted to DGP Sanjeev Dayal on Friday. The report recommends administrative or departmental action against a few officers handling the case,” said Deven Bharti, IG, law and order, Maharashtra, without quantifying the number of policemen or their ranks.
Mr Bharti said that the report also mentions that it was not justified to apply Sections like 295(A) (insulting religious beliefs) and 505 (2) (promoting enmity and hatred between classes) in the case.

Ireland to order statutory inquiry
Bengaluru, Nov. 23: Ireland will also order a statutory inquiry, in addition to the medical one, into the death of Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar due to pregnancy-related complications after being denied abortion, in a move seen as an attempt to meet her husband’s demand for a full public probe.
“... But we will also be setting up a statutory inquiry which will again, we hope, Praveen (Savita’s husband) will be happy with,” Ireland’s minister for higher education and skills Ciaran Cannon T.D., who was on a visit to the city, told reporters.
“We trust that he will trust the outcome of the (statutory) inquiry... Will trust the Irish state intentions in establishing such an inquiry. We want him to be able to trust us that we will respond effectively in a really meaningful way to the tragic loss of life (of Savita),” Mr Cannon said.
He said an announcement on the statutory inquiry is expected to be made in Ireland later Friday evening.
“Medical inquiry will continue because we need to establish medical circumstances around her case,” Mr Cannon said.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in Ireland earlier this week published the terms of reference of its inquiry and named three new members, two Irish and one from England, of the inquiry team. These replaced the Galway-based consultants who stepped aside in an unsuccessful attempt to meet the objections of Praveen. — PTI
