IM, Simi suspect; but cops reject terror role
The Indian Mujahideen (IM), an amalgam of Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashker-e-Tayyaba, and the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (Simi) have emerged key suspects in the attack on a tourist bus near the Jama Masjid here on Friday. The Delhi police, however, said it does not suspect the role of any organised terror group behind the incident.
In a statement on Sunday soon after the attack, the IM denounced the killings of civilians in the Kashmir Valley and pledged to strike at the Commonwealth Games. Security officials believe the shooting incident was an attempt to “terrorise” people and “create panic” ahead of the Games.
The IM statement was emailed to the BBC Hindi Service and the intelligence agencies are now trying to confirm its authenticity.

Braveheart hits back
Age Correspondent
New Delhi
Salim, a brave young rickshaw puller, emerged as the day’s hero: while others ran for cover as the gunmen opened fire near Jama Masjid, this braveheart not only chased them but also pelted a brick at the motorcycle-borne assailants. He told reporters later he had seen “two fair-skinned and tall men — one in a green T-shirt, the other in a black jacket” firing at the bus.
