India, Japan to fast-track talks on civil nuclear pact
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe decided Wednesday to accelerate talks on a civil nuclear deal to let Japan export nuclear reactors to India and to bolster maritime security cooperation at a time when China’s postures in the seas of the region have caused concern.
A joint statement issued after exhaustive talks between Dr Singh and Mr Abe said the two welcomed expanding bilateral defence ties and agreed to further cooperate on maritime issues to ensure freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce.
Japan and India also agreed to carry out a joint feasibility study on India’s first high-speed railway, that could make Japanese bullet train technology the favourite for any contract. The two PMs said the two nations would split the cost of the study into a link between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
