India still in FAA’s Category-1
Less than two months after the Mangalore air crash, the US’ Federal Aviation Agency on Thursday has informed the Indian government that India continues to remain in Category-1 of the FAA’s International Aviation Safety Assessment programme.
This was confirmed by the civil aviation ministry on Thursday. An FAA team, which is currently in New Delhi, discussed several issues with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that included “resolution of safety concerns” and “availability of qualified technical personnel in the DGCA”. These were areas where the FAA had raised concerns during its assessment of the DGCA in March 2009. The government stated on Thursday that any downgrading of India to category-2 by the FAA would have meant that Indian carriers would not have been able to expand their flight operations to the US while even the existing operations would have come under “heightened FAA surveillance”.
