Indian agencies want transfer, not sharing
Stung by the fact that the US never mentioned Pakistani-American LeT terrorist David Headley’s name to India even as he did recce of future terror targets post 26/11, the Indian security establishment is keen to bolster its own intelligence gathering and surveillance mechanisms.
Indian agencies “do not want to wait for the US to share bits of information” and instead is keenly looking towards a boost in cooperation between the two countries for transfer of better technical knowledge and security related equipments.
These may include high-valued surveillance and intelligence gathering equipment, coast guard equipment, highly-sensitive sensors and arms and ammunition.
Reports that Headley’s wives had forewarned the FBI in the US about Headley’s terror links way back in 2005 has not gone down well with Indian security agencies. “They (US) will give us information on what suits them and not what suits us. We have to avoid more such incidents in the future,” an official said.
The official maintained that India cannot depend on the US or any other country to provide information and its own capacities need to be developed.
