Indian to present Duckworth alternative
After a 10-year-long wait, the International Cricket Council has finally invited Thrissur resident V. Jayadevan to Hong Kong on June 27 to make a presentation on his “VJD” method of deciding rain-interrupted matches. The method is considered way better than the present Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) system.
Mr Jayadevan told this newspaper that he received an email from David Richardson, ICC general manager, on Tuesday requesting a presentation before the council’s technical committee.
The committee will try to understand Jayadevan’s method and take a call on using it.
VJD first came up for discussion after some senior cricketers and ICC members questioned the authenticity of D/L. The BCCI technical committee has already recommended the method for domestic use, but no major steps have been taken yet to introduce it officially.
There was talk recently that VJD could be introduced in IPL-4, but the BCCI shot the proposal down. “I consider this a big opportunity and hope to convince the ICC,” said Mr Jayadevan, a government engineer.
Experts say VJD’s biggest strength is that it calculates milestones in a match more perfectly than D/L. Jayadevan claims his method is more accurate than D/L in computing the projected score in a match.
