Industrial bill to rectify worker woes
The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the Industrial Disputes (Amendment) Bill 2009 empowering a workman to approach labour court after 45 days of his dismissal without a reference from appropriate government. In the original Industrial Disputes (Amendment) Bill, the workman had to wait for three months after his dismissal
before going to the labour court. However, the government has brought the limit down to 45 days on recommendation of the Standing Committee of Parliament.
The bill also provides for establishment of a grievance redressal machinery in every industrial unit employing 20 or more workmen. A person receiving up to Rs 10,000 per month would fall under the category of workman. At present, this limit is Rs 1600 a month. Replying to a debate on the bill, labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge said the government was open to suggestions to increase the threshold to Rs 25,000.
