Infant survives as 5 family members die
Two weeks after their second anniversary, G. Mohan Rao, 28, and wife Deepika Seethaiah, 26, residents of Nizampet here, were to travel to Shirdi with their nine-month-old son for the child’s “mundan”. The couple’s parents and Deepika’s sister were also accompanying them, and Rao, a software engineer, accordingly booked tickets on Madurai-Manmad Express.
But since the tickets were not confirmed, Rao cancelled them and reserved seats on a Sree Kaleshwari Travels bus two days ago, his brother-in-law, Mr N. Ravikant, said on Saturday. It was the ill-fated bus. Miraculously, nine-month-old Jaivardhan survived the mishap that left his father and all four grandparents dead.
Besides Mohan Rao, his father G. Venkateshwar Rao (55), mother G. Adamma, father-in-law M. Kristaiha (55) and mother-in-law M. Savitri died on the spot. The child, his mother Deepika and aunt Radhika Seethaiah (22) are recuperating at Solapur civil hospital.
According to Mr Ravikant, Mohan Rao and Deepika had decided to have Jaivant’s hair shaved off at Shirdi soon after he was born as a tribute to Sai Baba.

Chandigarh, June 16
What is there in the name, the adage makes lot of sense, but when it comes to numbers same is not true, at least in Punjab where craze for single digit vehicle registration number is well-known.
In an auction of such numbers in Chandigarh on Friday, Punjabi once again shown its craving for such numbers as `17 lakhs was paid to purchase CH01 AN0001, the highest ever amount paid to purchase a registration number in the history of Chandigarh. The coveted number went to city businessman Jagit Singh Chahal through an open auction.
The businessman has a cavalcade of a dozen vehicles, all having registration number 1.
Mr Chahal took the new number for his brand new Land Cruiser, a super luxury SUV, variant of which are available at prices in the range of `85-99 lakh, approximately.
The Chandigarh administration had kept the reserve price of this number at `25,000, which fetched them `17 lakhs. There were total 11 bidders for the number.
“All my cars have 0001 numbers in various series. I consider number 1 my lucky charm. I am into buying these numbers since it was not a concept and was not so popular as it is now,” says Mr Chahal who runs a tyre business in the city.
