IAEA for better N-plant safety
age correspondent
New Delhi, Nov. 14
A 12-member team of international nuclear experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have asked for introduction of stronger safety measures in the Rawatbhata nuclear plant in Rajasthan. The plant suffered a tritium leak in June this year resulting in 34 causal workers being exposed to high doses of tritium. The IAEA team, which have been studying the safety of these plants for the last fortnight, pointed out in a statement issued by the Operational Safety Review Team (Osart) that the plant “should enhance actions to maintain electrical cable conditions at a high standard.” It also recommended that fire doors inspection and maintenance needed to be enhanced. They further want “certain aspects of the plant’s surveillance testing program should be further enhanced and the plant should also enhance root-cause analyses to systematically identify all learning opportunities.” The Osart team with members from Canada, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden has given the plant management recommendations in the form of “technical notes”.
