Injection promises arthritis relief
A new study has revealed that an injection called Viscosupplementation is the best alternative for arthritis patients who can’t undergo surgery.
The Osteoarthritis Synvisc One Indian Post Marketing Study (Oasis) has revealed positive results on the impact of single-shot Viscosuppleme-ntation therapy in reducing knee pain in osteoarthritis patients. The first of its kind Oasis findings are especially significant for Indians, given that 5 to 6 per cent of Indians suffer from joint pain complications. The development promises relief to over 15 million knee-osteoarthritis patients in the country.
Knee-osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage that acts as a cushion between bones, in joints, begins to wear out. This results in inflammation and pain in joints, thereby restricting movement. The Viscosupplementation injection uses a fluid to lubricate and cushion the diseased knee joint enabling easy movement and increased flexibility.
Till a few years ago, knee-osteoarthritis impacted only the older population but a growing reverse trend shows that more and more young people are being diagnosed with this condition. According to the investigator of the study, Dr Sanjeev Jain, consultant orthopaedic and joint replacement surgeon at Dr L.H. Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, “India has the second largest osteoarthritis patient base around the world. The study has for the first time shown the effectiveness of single shot Viscosupplementation. Patients now need not constantly consume painkillers. The single shot therapy can provide relief for up to 52 weeks.” Findings show that it is especially effective when used in the initial stages of the disease.
