Inmate kills jailer in Jodhpur jail
An inmate has murdered the jailer of Jodhpur jail, Bharat Bhushan, 53, on Saturday evening. According to the police, the jailer was on a supervision round when the inmate suddenly attacked him. The assailants used a sharp weapon that was made in jail itself.
Director-general of prisons, Omendar Bhardwaj, confirmed the incident. “The inmate was hiding behind a door and suddenly attacked the jailer,” says Mr Bhardwaj. He had ordered a probe in to the incident.
“Bharwaj was one of the best prison officers and also played a role of a police inspector in K.C. Bokadia’s film Teri Meharbaniyaa,” says a jail officer.

Man burns self after no police action

Distraught over the police inaction following the disappearance of his daughter, a middle-aged man set himself on fire in the office of the deputy inspector-general of police in Kanpur district.
Ramanand, 50, has been admitted to a local hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. He has suffered nearly 70 per cent burns.
According to family sources, Ramanand’s daughter disappeared form their house in Kalyanpur locality about five months ago and the family suspected that she had been kidnapped by some local miscreants.
However, the policemen refused to take any initiative in the case and even told Ramanand not to meet them in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, SP Kanpur told reporters that an inquiry had been ordered into the incident and the cops, if found guilty, would be punished.

Landslides kill 11 in Uttarakhand
Dehra Dun : At least 11 people were killed and 14 others were trapped under debris as landslides triggered by heavy rains struck Uttarakhand destroying scores of houses in several villages of the hill state.
The worst-affected area was Avalbagh block of Almora district where several villages were hit by heavy landslides killing six people and trapping 14 others under the debris in two villages, district magistrate Almora Subardhan said.
Five people were killed when their house was flattened by heavy landslips at Pilkha village this afternoon and in nearby Devali village, a total of 15 persons were trapped under the debris of collapsed houses.

CSE rebuts Oz firm’s honey claim

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has rebutted the claims made by Capilano, the Australian honey producing firm, which has rejected the tests on honey conducted recently by the CSE’s pollution monitoring lab.
The tests had found high levels of antibiotics in most leading brands of honey sold in the country. The brands included names like Dabur and Patanjali, as well as foreign brands like Capilano. In fact, the Capilano Pure and Natural Honey sample which was tested was found to contain three antibiotics.
