INOC congratulates Sonia on her re-election as Congress chief

The Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) has congratulated Sonia Gandhi on her re-election as the president of the Indian National Congress for the fourth consecutive term.

"I congratulate Mrs Gandhi for steering the party and the nation in a long period of political stability with high integrity and honour," INOC president Surinder Malhotra said in a statement.

"Under her charismatic leadership, democracy and secularism continue to triumph and India is reaching new heights in its economic progress," Malhotra said.

In a statement, INOC president praised Mrs Gandhi for keeping the coalition government intact despite conflicting ideologies with her political dexterity and acumen.

"She is one of the great social reformers of our time," said George Abraham, executive general secretary of INOC.
"Without her strong commitment and support, the 'National Rural Employment Guarantee Act' or 'Women's Reservation Bill' may not have survived'. She has indeed shown competence and compassion in dealing with the complex issues of our time," he said.

A resolution passed by the Executive Committee of INOC praised Mrs Gandhi for her many accomplishments and wished her continuing success in the days ahead.

The INOC also lauded her for her steadfast dedication to the nation and genuine affection for the country's poorest, promising to work alongside her for a better tomorrow.

The resolution further highlighted the instrumental role she played in winning two consecutive national elections for the UPA and her being a great proponent of the strategic alliance with the United States.

It also noted the steps the party has undertaken to safeguard energy for the future in the country with the signing of the Civil Nuclear Agreement with the United States even at the risk of being thrown out of power.
