Intense cold wave sweeps across UP
An intense cold wave is sweeping across Uttar Pradesh with the state capital, Lucknow, recording a low of 4.4ºC during the past 24 hours.
The temperature on Sunday morning was 5.4ºC, which is three degrees below normal.
Nine persons lost their lives in road mishaps in different incidents since a heavy fog had enveloped various districts in the state, causing serious visibility problems.
Train and air traffic was also adversely affected and several trains were either cancelled or running late by several hours. UP Met director J.P. Gupta said that dry icy winds from the snow-fed regions were sweeping the state, leading to a sudden drop in temperatures and were also creating fog. The visibility in the morning was less than 10 metres. Mr Gupta said that there will be no change in weather conditions in the next few days.
Najibabad was the coldest in the state with 3.4ºC minimum temperature followed by Kanpur with 3.5ºC, Agra ºC, Farehgarh and Lucknow 4.4ºC each and Muzaffarnagar and Meerut 4.8ºC . Gorakhpur recorded the lowest day temperature 12.9ºC.
The Met department has also predicted that weather will mainly remain dry all over the state.
Many parts of the east UP and some parts of the West may witness dense fog.
