It’s official: Jaya, Shettar set for Cauvery pow-wow
Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa will meet her Karnataka counterpart Jagadish Shivappa Shettar in Bengaluru on Thursday to iron out their differences on the long-drawn Cauvery water dispute. This meeting of CMs, in connection with water sharing, is being held after 14 years.
This follows the Supreme Court’s suggestion to chief ministers of both states to find an amicable solution in a “congenial manner” in the interest of the farmers of their states.
Barely a few hours after the apex court’s suggestion came on Monday, Tamil Nadu made the first move. It was Tamil Nadu chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi who called his Karnataka counterpart, expressing the willingness of Ms Jayalalithaa to hold discussions with Mr Shettar.
Confirming this, a Tamil Nadu government release, referring to the adjournment of its plea seeking release of its share of Cauvery water from Karnataka, particularly under the distress sharing formula (equal sharing of water during crisis) to save the samba crops, said, “As per the direction of the apex court, chief minister Jayalalithaa will meet the Karnataka chief minister in Bengaluru on November 29.”
“We want you to meet in a congenial manner and discuss the issue in the larger interest of farmers from both states,” the SC had said on Monday while posting the matter to November 30.
