Italian Marines put in police custody
The first class chief judicial magistrate of Karuna-gapally, K.P. Joy, on Monday remanded Italian Marines Latorre Massimi-liano and Salvatore Giro-ne, who fired and killed two fishermen last Wedn-esday, to judicial custody till March 5. They will be in police custody for the first three days of the 14-day remand period for investigation purposes.
The court prima facie found there is case against the Marines and further investigation was required. If the police needs more time for investigation, they can apply for further custody of the Marines after three days. The Marines are to be produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Kollam on February 23.
“Though the Italian side argued that the incident happened in International waters and the trial has to be in Italy, the prosecution made it clear that the incident took place 22.5 nautical miles (off the coast) and that it is inside our territory,” said additional public prosecutor K. Anilkumar. The marines who were brought by 4.50 pm to the magistrate’s residence at Chakkalamuk-ku, near Karunagapally, in two Sumo cabs.
