It's raining cash on voters in TN, says Jaya

AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa who wound up her whirlwind election tour of the state on Monday evening fired a parting salvo at the DMK alleging that the party had been “raining cash” on voters and it weakened the state’s economy.

“Realising that his party would be defeated in the election, Karunanidhi (chief minister) is raining cash in a frantic bid to change the voters’ mind. Since the last three days he has been raining cash in all the 234 constituencies hoping to create an illusion that the people would vote for his party,” she said.

“Whatever be his efforts, he cannot change people’s mind. The DMK is sure to lose the elections as people are determined to put an end to family rule and elect the AIADMK,” she said adding, “the election results cannot be altered with Karunanidhi’s corrupt money. No one can stop us (AIADMK) from winning.”

Ms Jayalalithaa, who had been electioneering for over 19 days, had reserved the penultimate days of her campaign in the city while her archrival and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi confined his campaign to his constituency Tiruvarur on Monday.

Seeking a clear mandate for her combine at R. K. Nagar, Royapuram, Perambur, Harbour and Mylapore, Ms Jayalalithaa claimed that the DMK’s achievements were the 2G spectrum scam and making Tamil Nadu backward in economic development and maintenance of law and order.

She appealed to the people to put an end to rowdyism, lawlessness and family rule in the state by voting out the DMK and ensuring that party did not even get its deposit.

Ms Jayalalithaa, who is seeking election from Srirangam, reiterated her poll assurance of providing financial assistance to the Hindus for a pilgrimage to Kailash-Mansarovar and to the Christians for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She also urged the public to vote along with their family members and thereby prevent the casting of bogus votes. “This will ensure safeguarding democracy,” she added.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
