Jairam Modi praise irks Gujarat Cong
Gujarat Congress leaders strongly objected to Union minister of state (independent charge) for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh giving a certificate of good governance to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.
The leaders, who called on Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, brought to her notice Mr Ramesh’s praise of Mr Modi openly in Gujarat (Dandi) recently.
According to the reports, Mr Ramesh was quoted as saying “Maharashtra can learn a thing or two from Gujarat in fighting pollution.”
This statement will demoralise the rank and file in the Gujarat Congress which has been fighting against the Modi government. The Union minister, on the other hand, criticised the performance of the Congress government in Maharashtra on “Modi land”.
“Soniaji heard the complaint,” the leaders said.
Mr Ramesh had earlier confronted at least half-a-dozen Union ministers on different issues, including P. Chidambaram, Sharad Pawar, Kamal Nath, Kapil Sibal, Sriprakash Jaiswal and Prithviraj Chavan.
A section of the Congress fear that Mr Modi would certainly exploit Mr Ramesh’s praise to embarrass the state Congress further.
