Jamiat: No role in Mumbai violence
Assam Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind president Badruddin Ajmal here on Sunday condemned the violence in south Mumbai, while asserting that organisation outside Assam did not have any business in raking up issues concerning the state.
Bogged down by charges in a section of media of instigating protest in Mumbai, the perfume baron-turned-politician Ajmal said, “Normalcy is returning in the trouble-torn Bodoland Territorial Council and all communities have strong yearning for peace and harmony.”
“We do not want organisations outside Assam to disturb the peace which has started returning to violence hit areas,” he asserted.
He also clarified that violence broke out in a protest march organised by the Raza Academy at Azad Maidan on Saturday.
“The Raza Academy represents the Barelvi sect and not the Deobandi sect to which we belong to,” he said. “Deobandis have no truck with Barelvis. The two do not participate in each other’s programme. So there is no question of my involvement. We condemn the violence in South Mumbai. The attack on media persons and their vans was unfortunate and not acceptable in a democratic society where we live in,” he added.
Deobandi and Barelvi are the two branches of Sunni sect of Islam. The two branches are known for their divergent approach to the religion.
He also said, “Let there be inquiry against me if I have any involvement. I have spoken to Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde about the allegation, and he assured me of looking into the matter.”
Angry over the charges of instigating violence Mr Ajmal said, “I am also approaching Supreme Court to file a case against dragging my name. I am really hurt by the allegation. It has damaged image in the public.”
