Jammu and Kashmir to get its share of water from Punjab after 30 years

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday said the state would get its share of water from Punjab following a three decade-long dispute over it.

"For the first time in 30 years, the state would be getting its share of water from Punjab's Ranjit Sagar Dam," Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Moh-ud-Din, said while addressing a public rally in Doda district.

"This would bring another green revolution in the state irrigating some 1.35 lakh acres of land from Kathua to Jammu," he said.

The minister said government enacted the Jammu and Kashmir Water Resources Act-2010, forcing the National Hydel Power Corporation to pay water usage charges to the state government to the tune of Rs900 crore this year. This, he said, would enhance the state's income by 30 per cent.

"The state government has also decided to stake claim over transfer of Salal and Uri hydel projects from NHPC".
