Jaswant gets task of expanding NDA
Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh has been entrusted with the task of building ties with other political parties. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari announced this on Monday.
With Assembly polls scheduled in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam in 2011 and the NDA’s impressive performance in the recently held Bihar Assembly polls, the BJP is keen to strengthen the NDA fold.
As of now, there are only four political parties including BJP, JD(U), Shiv Sena and SAD, who constitute the NDA.
Mr Singh, who was expelled from BJP in 2009 for eulogising Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his book, returned to the party in June, 2010.
Sources said it was on BJP parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani’s insistence, that Mr Singh, also a Lok Sabha MP from Darjeeling, was given this task. The issue was discussed during BJP’s recently-held office bearers meeting in Jammu.
Being one of the senior-most leaders in the party, Mr Singh has not been given any major responsibility after his return to the BJP, therefore, the party decided to entrust him with this task, sources said.
“BJP national president Nitin Gadkari has entrusted the task of maintaining continuous contact and relation-building with all political parties to Jaswant Singh, MP,” the party said in a statement.
It could be mentioned here that before the 2009 general elections, Mr Singh was entrusted with the task to enhance the NDA fold.
Mr Singh, a former Union minister, is known for his persuasive skills which the party feels can be used for roping in former allies and convince more parties to join NDA ahead of the 2014 general elections.
Sources disclosed Bharatiya Janata Party is keen to build ties with its former alliance partners including INLD, Asom Gana Parishad, AIADMK and TRS, among others.
