Jat protest hits water for South, East Delhi
More bad news for all those living in Delhi, many areas of which are already reeling under an acute shortage of water. Protesting Jat leaders angry at being denied reservation in Central services on Sunday downed shutters at a plant in Modinagar, Uttar Pradesh, from where water is sent to the Sonia Vihar treatment plant.
Over 40 per cent of the city, particularly areas in South and East Delhi, will be affected. The Delhi Jal Board has decided to ration water in all parts of the city till normal supply is restored from UP, said DJB chief executive Ramesh Negi. He said Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta would meet his UP counterpart on Monday, after which a clear picture might emerge. He added that the area magistrate was learnt to be at the spot and making efforts to defuse the situation. A DJB official said among the areas likely to be most affected due to the shortage are Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Vasant Vihar and Saket, which are already quite parched.
