Jawan hurt in Naxal attack in Bastar

A jawan of the newly-created Chhattisgarh Auxiliary Armed Force was on Sunday critically wounded when he was attacked with sharp weapons by a group of armed Naxals at his native village of Kondru under Jangla police station in Bijapur district in south Bastar, the police said. The tribal youth, R.K. Kodam, ran nearly 3 km in forested area to reach the Jangla police station, bleeding profusely. He was rushed to the local government hospital. He was shifted to district headquarters hospital at Bijapur when his condition worsened. “He was yet to be declared out of danger. He injured two Naxals with a knife while trying to defend himself,” Bijapur district ASP (Naxal operation) Ashok Singh said.
The CAAF has been established recently to absorb the special police officers (SPOs) — tribal youths recruited by the Chhattisgarh police to fight Naxals — following a directive from the Supreme Court to disband SPOs.

Three wood bison poisoned to death
age correspondent
Raipur, Jan. 29

Three wood bison, listed as endangered species, were allegedly poisoned to death in a reserve forest in Chhattisgarh, official sources said on Sunday.
The bodies of the bovine mammals were spotted in the Baranbapara reserve forest in Mahasamund district on Sunday morning by local tribals, who immediately reported the matter to the forest officials concerned.
Veterinary doctor C.S. Chandrakar, who checked the bodies, said the wild animals died of poisoning. He suspected that they might have been given poisoned water by poachers. However, the exact cause of deaths would be ascertained after post-mortem of the bodies, he said.
The wood bison have a population of barely 11,000 in the world and are facing extinction due to large scale poaching.
Many reserve forests in Chhattisgarh are home to quite a good number of bison.
