Jaya gets cracking on rain impact

Chennai: The state government is fully geared up to tackle any situation arising out of the low pressure area over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa said and announced holiday on September 12 for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvalluvar districts in view of heavy rains lashing the districts.
The chief minister, who,  along with her Cabinet colleagues,  reviewed the state of the precautionary measures being taken against the backdrop of more rains threatening to batter the northern coastal districts, said the quarterly examinations scheduled for Thursday would be held later.
“My government is fully prepared to face any situation and all arrangements are in place to address damages due to inundation,” she said.
Jayalalithaa instructed the official machinery to step up vigil and undertake relief work on war footing and make sure that people were not affected due to the heavy rains. The collectors of the districts were closely monitoring the situation and there was no damage owing to rains so far, she said instructed the officials to provide necessary relief to the affected if required.
Jayalalithaa told the officials of various departments to take adequate measures in the event of inundation and ensure enough stock of medicines to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases like dengue. The Fire and Rescue Services Department would be on standby mode to respond to distress calls, she added.
With increased inflow into Kollidam river because of heavy rains expected in Karnataka, officials were monitoring the situation there and also at Veeranam lake in Cuddalore district, she added.
