Jayalalithaa promises to make TN power-surplus state
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who undertook a whirlwind electioneering tour of Pudukottai on Saturday, said Tamil Nadu would soon be free from power outages.
“My government is striving hard to make Tamil Nadu the No. 1 state… I am personally monitoring the power scenario in the state.
I would like to assure that Tamil Nadu will soon be made a power surplus state,” said Ms Jayalalithaa while assuring to fulfil all the basic requirements of the people of Pudukottai, facing by-polls on June 12.
Campaigning for her party’s candidate V.R. Karthik Thondaiman, she blamed the previous DMK regime for not taking any steps to improve power generation capacity, leading to power outages now.
Listing out the various power projects that her government had initiated, Ms Jayalalithaa said the 3,500 MW gap between demand and supply would be bridged soon.
The power situation has already improved with windmills generating more power and the duration of power cuts have reduced following the resumption of generation of 840 MW power from Mettur thermal plant, affected by a fire.
The work at Koodankulam plant was nearing completion and two units would commence power generation very soon, she said.
She announced several steps to improve basic amenities in Pudukottai, and urged the people to vote for her party candidate.
