Jayalalithaa sanctions Rs 2,950cr for road projects
Chennai: In a bid to improve and strengthen road infrastructure and connectivity in the state, chief minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday sanctioned Rs 2,950 crore under the integrated road infrastructure scheme to relay, widen and strengthen the road network in the state, which included Rs 98 crore facelift to Tiruttani-Renigunta road.
According to an official release, 2,420 projects will be taken up across the state with the funds allocated by the CM which will help accelerate the growth of industrial and transport resources in those regions, besides improving living standards of rural populace.
As part of the scheme, important district roads of 912 km will be converted as two-way, and 945 km district roads improved. In all, 20 bridges and culverts will be constructed at a total cost of Rs 1,178 crore. As much as 854 works will be undertaken under this plan.
She had sanctioned Rs 2,262.50 crore last year for the scheme and Rs 2,950 crore earmarked this year for widening roads, improving quality and capacity of roads, construction of bridges, creating stormwater drains, besides laying new by-pass roads.
Among the works to be taken up under the scheme are four-lane conversion on Chennai-Tiruttani-Renigunta road, Rs 52 crore bypass roads in Thanjavur, improving of approach roads of ECR in Kanchipuram district at Rs 11.24 crore, and roads in Chennai, Tiruchy, Pudukottai, Sivangangai, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupur and Tirunelveli districts.
Elaborating the fund allocation for various works, the release said 55-km long roads of state highways would be converted into two-way roads, and quality of roads measuring 1,170 km would be improved, 30 bridges and culverts would be constructed, lands would be acquired at a total cost of Rs 1,012 crore.
