Jayalalithaa wants to retrieve Katchatheevu
Having taken keen interest in retrieving the Katchatheevu island that has strategic importance in the waters between India and Sri Lanka, the TN chief minister has shown that she means business by taking the matter to the Supreme Court.
Not known to be like other TN politicians who make noise but do little about the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, J. Jayalalithaa is willing to act to force the Centre to take a firm stand on the island nation that would make a difference to the lives of Tamil Nadu fishermen who are harassed constantly by the Sri Lankan Navy.
“It was decided in the meeting that the Tamil Nadu government will file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to expedite the case (filed by her in 2008 and in which the revenue department impleaded later) seeking declaration of the agreements as illegal,” said Ms Jayalalithaa after chairing a meeting on Friday with the chief secretary, revenue and other officials, to review the situation over the recurring attacks on TN fishermen.
In pressing the case, Jayalalithaa will not only help put pressure on the Centre and Sri Lanka to get serious on the fishermen’s issue but it would also reiterate her position as the prime champion of the rights of Tamils in India and in Sri Lanka.
