JD-U: Opp. united on census
Continuing with its opposition to the Women’s Reservation Bill, the JD(U) on Sunday claimed that the government will have to face a united Opposition during upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament if it failed to decide on inclusion of caste enumeration in the ongoing Census.
Criticising the government’s “dilly-dallying” approach towards the issue, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said, “There was complete unanimity over the inclusion of caste in the census both in the NDA and the UPA. Except its one or two members, even the Congress as a whole had supported the idea. Now if they give excuses for delaying it, it will not be tolerated.”
The government should understand that parliamentary democracy runs on “truth”, he said.
He added that the formation of a Group of Ministers (GOM) and to once gain seek the opinion of political parties are just tools for delaying the “inevitable decision”.
Mr Yadav had a few days back shot off a letter to finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, who heads the GoM, ruing that the government is dragging its feet over the issue.
On the Women’s Reservation Bill issue, he said, “There is no question of supporting the bill in its present form in the upcoming Monsoon Session. Our opposition to it is not new. We are opposing it openly. The majority of leaders in all parties, including the Congress, do not want it but they cannot express it publicly. It’s not a question of the NDA or the UPA. If parties issue no whip on it, the bill will fall flat... with no support from any quarter.”
